Organizational sustainability is not just about having enough funding – it's about building strong systems, capable people, and effective governance that can withstand challenges and seize opportunities.

Drawing on our experience working with over 50 organizations across Rwanda, we have developed a comprehensive framework for capacity development that addresses five key dimensions:

1. Governance and Leadership Strong governance is the foundation of organizational sustainability. This includes clear roles and responsibilities, effective board oversight, and visionary leadership.

2. Program Delivery Organizations must excel at their core work. This requires robust program design, quality implementation, and continuous learning and adaptation.

3. Financial Management Sound financial management ensures resources are used effectively and efficiently. This includes budgeting, accounting, internal controls, and financial reporting.

4. Human Resources People are an organization's greatest asset. Effective HR management includes recruitment, development, performance management, and retention.

5. External Relations Organizations don't operate in isolation. Building strong relationships with stakeholders, partners, and the broader community is essential for sustainability.

Our framework provides practical tools and approaches for assessing and building capacity in each of these areas. The key is to take a holistic approach – strengthening one area while neglecting others will not lead to sustainable change.
